Replacing a Damaged Ceramic Tile

Accidents do happen, so sooner or later you may find a cracked or damaged tile in your beautiful ceramic floor that you want to replace. Fortunately, it's not too hard to replace a cracked, chipped, or broken tile. Here are the tools you'll need:

  • Grout saw
  • Glass cutter
  • Goggles
  • Centerpoint Chisel
  • Hammer
  • Tile adhesive
  • Level
  • Masking tape

Of course, you'll also need a replacement tile and a tile cutter if you're not replacing a full-sized tile. Here's how to replace a tile:

  1. Use the grout saw to remove the grout around it.

  2. Score the tile with the glasscutter by cutting a straight line from corner to corner in an "X" shape. Use a straight cut of wood or other straight edge as a guide.

  3. Put on your goggles and line up the centerpoint chisel so the point is on the center of the X you scored into the tile with the glasscutter.

  4. With the chisel centered, tap it with the hammer. The tile should break neatly into four triangular pieces.

  5. Clean the area of remaining grout, tile adhesive and tile fragments.

  6. Smear tile adhesive on the replacement tile, center it in the hole and keep it in place with masking tape.

  7. Lay the level across the tile with the ends of the level overlapping the adjoining tiles and check that the tile is even with the surrounding tiles. If not, tap it down with the ball of your fist until it's level. Turn the level 90 degrees and repeat the process to ensure it's level in all directions. This will keep the replacement tile level with the surrounding tiles so there are no "lips" to trip over.

  8. Once the tile adhesive has set firmly, fill in the grout and finish off.
